唐武德四年（621年）分曲江县置，属韶州（1）。治所姑定于今广东省曲江县西江湾镇（2）。贞观八年（634年）省入曲江（3）。

（1），《新唐书》卷43上?地理7上?岭南道?韶州始兴郡：“本番州，武德四年析广州之曲江、始兴、乐昌、翁源置。寻更名东衡州，贞观元年又更名。…县六：曲江、上。武德四年置临泷、良化二县，贞观八年省。”（北京，中华书局，1975年，4册，1097页）。
（2），《读史方舆纪要》卷101?广东二?韶州府?曲江县：临泷废县“又西南有梁化废县，亦武德四年置，贞观八年废。”（北京，中华书局，1955年，5册，4236页）。同治《韶州府志》卷25?古迹略?城址：“良化废县，唐置，在临泷县西。”（台湾，成文出版社《中国方志丛书》第2号，493页）。今姑据此定点于曲江县西梁家坝，今名江湾镇。
