宋绍兴元年（1131年）以雷江县改名，为循州治（1）。元至元十三年（1276年）为循州路治，二十三年（1286年）为循州治（2）。明洪武二年（1369年）州废，县属惠州府，清因之（3）。治所即今广东省龙川县西南佗城（4）。1912年废府留县（5）。

（1），《嘉庆一统志》卷445?惠州府?建置沿革?龙川县：“唐天授二年改置雷乡县，属循州。五代南汉乾亨元年移循州来治，仍改县曰龙川。宋为循州海丰郡治，属广南东路，宣和三年改县曰雷江，绍兴元年复故。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，166册）。
（2），《元史》卷62?地理五?湖广行省?循州：“三年立总管府。二十三年降为散州。领县三：龙川、兴宁、长乐。”（北京，中华书局，1976年，5册，1519）。
（3），《明史》45?地理六?广东?惠州府：“元惠州路，属广东道宣慰司。洪武元年为府。领州一县十。归善，倚。”“龙川，元循州治此，直隶广东道。洪武二年四月，州废，来属。（北京，中华书局，1974年，4册，1140页）。
《嘉庆一统志》卷445?惠州府?建置沿革?龙川县：“明洪武二年州废，以县属惠州府。本朝因之。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，166册）。
（4），雷乡、龙川、雷江、龙川属名称变更，未见迁徙记载，直至清末。宣统元年《广东舆地全图》龙川县图，清代龙川县治即今广东省龙川县西南佗城。
（5），《中华民国行政区划简表》11?广东省：惠阳县，“旧归善县（旧惠州府附郭首县）。民元裁府留县并改名。”有龙川县。（内政部编，商务印书馆，1947年，76页）。",
