宋宣和三年（1121年）以龙川县更名，为循州治（1）。治所即今广东省龙川县西南佗城（2）。绍兴元年（1131年）复改名龙川县（3）。

（1），《嘉庆一统志》卷445?惠州府?建置沿革?龙川县：“唐天授二年改置雷乡县，属循州。五代南汉乾亨元年移循州来治，仍改县曰龙川。宋为循州海丰郡治，属广南东路，宣和三年改县曰雷江，绍兴元年复故。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，166册）。
（2），雷乡、龙川、雷江、龙川属名称变更，未见迁徙记载，直至清末。宣统元年《广东舆地全图》龙川县图，清代龙川县治即今广东省龙川县西南佗城。
