北宋淳化五年（994）升王朝场置。⑴治所即今湖南省岳阳市东北陆城。属岳州。至道二年（996）改名临湘县。⑵
⑴《元丰九域志》卷6：淳化“五年升王朝场为县。至道二年改王朝县为临湘。”（中华书局，第272页）
曾巩《隆平集》卷1《郡县》：淳化五年“岳州王朝场为平江县”。（影印《四库全书》本，第371册，第11页）县名疑误。
一作淳化四年（993）。《舆地纪胜》卷69《荆湖北路》：“《国朝会要》云：淳化四年升为王朝县。至道二年改为临湘县。”（中华书局，第3册，第2339-2340页）
