唐神龙三年（707）析湘阴县置。⑴治所在今湖南平江县驻地汉昌镇东南中县坪。属岳州。天宝元年（742）属巴陵郡。元和四年（809）迁今治。⑵
⑴《旧唐书》卷41《地理五》：“昌江。中下。神龙三年析湘阴置。”（北京，中华书局，4册，1069页）
⑵嘉庆《清一统志》卷359《岳州府二》：“汉昌故城在平江县东，汉末置县，属长沙郡。三国吴改曰吴昌。……《元和志》：神龙三年，析湘阴于故吴昌城，改置昌江县。《岳阳风土记》：唐神龙三年，置昌江，尝隶潭，今隶岳，后唐改平江。《通鉴注》：五代改曰平江，盖后唐既灭梁，楚人为之避庙讳昌字也。《府志》：旧县址在今县东故县乡，后迁县东太平乡，唐元和中迁今治。”（133册，1页）
《湖南省志》第2卷《地理志（修订本）》第2篇《沿革》：“汉昌和吴昌的县治在今县治东南30里金铺观。唐复置昌江县的县治在今县治东南的中县坪。唐元和四年（公元809年）始迁今治。（见同治《平江县志》）。”（湖南人民出版社，上册，568页）",
