北宋崇宁五年（1106）以临口寨地置。⑴治所在今湖南通道侗族自治县驻地双江镇东北临口镇。属武冈军。南宋绍兴八年（1138）废。⑵
⑴《舆地纪胜》卷62《荆湖南路》：“又临口寨，自建军以来，改为临冈县。绍兴八年，废为寨，并入绥宁县焉。”（中华书局，第3册，第2165页）
李攸《宋朝事实》卷19《升降州县二》：“邵州，……崇宁四年，以临口寨为临冈县。”又：“武冈军，崇寜五年升武冈县为军，以莳竹县分为绥寜、临冈二县隶焉。”
元?脱脱：《宋史》卷88《地理四》：“临冈。……崇宁五年，改寨为县，隶武冈军。”（中华书局，1977年校点本，第7册，第2201页）
一说崇宁四年置。《文献通考》卷319《舆地五》：“邵州……崇宁四年，以莳竹县之临口寨为临冈县。”（第2508页）
⑵据上引《舆地纪胜》。《宋史》等书多作南渡后废，无具体年代。",
