明洪武九年四月甲午（1376.4.29）降道州府置，⑴原道州府附郭县营道县并入。治所即今湖南道县。领宁远、江华、永明3县，崇祯十二年（1639）增领新田县。⑵属永州府。清康熙后无属领，至清末未变。⑶
