唐大历二年（767）析延唐县置。⑴因年号得名。治所在今湖南新田县驻地龙泉镇南4公里大历县村。⑵属道州。北宋乾德三年（965）并入宁远县。⑶
⑴《旧唐书》卷40《地理三》：“大歴，大歴二年，湖南观察使韦贯之奏请析延唐县于道州东南二百二十里舂陵侯故城北十五里置县。因以大歴为名。”（中华书局，5册，1617页）
