唐乾宁中，以沅江县改名。⑴治所即今湖南沅江市城区。初属岳州，后改属朗州。⑵北宋乾德元年（963）复改名沅江县，复属岳州。⑶
⑴宋?欧阳修：《新唐书》卷41《地理五》：“桥江，中。本沅江，乾宁中更名。”（中华书局，1975年校点本，第4册，第1069页）
《舆地纪胜》卷68《荆湖北路》：“沅江县，……马氏割据，改为桥江县。《舆地广纪》：五代时属朗州。《国朝会要》云：乾德元年复曰沅江，隶岳州。《旧经》：元符二年拨隶鼎州。”（中华书局，第3册，第2307页）
按：马殷以湖南留后判湖南军府事，事在乾宁三年（896）九月（据《资治通鉴》）。因乾宁年号先后跨五年，故《新唐书》云改沅江为桥江在乾宁中，当即乾宁三年。
⑵《舆地纪胜》卷68：“沅江，马氏割据改为桥江县。《舆地广记》云：五代时属朗州。《国朝会要》云：乾德元年复曰沅江，隶岳州。《旧经》云：元符二年拨隶鼎州。”
元?脱脱：《宋史》卷88《地理四》：“湘阴，中。乾德二年，自鼎州隶岳州，俄而来隶。”（中华书局，1977年校点本，第7册，第21？？页）
按：桥江县、湘阴县自岳州来隶，暂无确切时间可查。推测可能是后周显德元年（954），升朗州为大都督府，湖南使府移治于此时，扩大辖境，故割县来属。待详考。
