北宋乾德中析武陵县桃源乡置。⑴治所即今湖南桃源县驻地漳江镇。属朗州。大中祥符五年（1012）属鼎州，乾元元年（1165）属常德府。⑵元至元十四年（1277）属常德路。⑶元贞元年（1295）升为桃源州。⑷
⑴元?脱脱：《宋史》卷88《地理四》：“桃源，望。乾德中，析武陵地置县。”（中华书局，1977年校点本，第7册，第2195页）
《元丰九域志》卷6作乾德元年：“县三。乾德元年改桥江县为沅江，以湘阴、沅江二县隶岳州，析武陵县地置桃源县。”（中华书局，第270页）
一作乾德二年。曾巩《隆平集》卷1《郡县》：乾德二年，“以朗州桃源乡为桃源县”。（《四库全书》本，第371册，第10页）
《舆地纪胜》卷68《荆湖北路》：“《国朝会要》云：乾德二年析武陵置桃源县，从转运使张永锡之请也。”
按：本文暂作乾德二年（964）置。
