三国吴置。⑴属武陵郡。治所即今湖南汉寿县驻地城关镇。⑵晋、南朝宋、齐、梁、陈因之。⑶隋开皇九年（589）平陈，属朗州。⑷大业三年（607）属武陵郡。⑸唐武德四年（621），地入唐，属朗州。⑹天宝元年（742），属武陵郡。⑺乾元元年（758）复属朗州。⑻北宋乾德元年（963），地入宋。大中祥符五年（1012），属鼎州。⑼北宋大观中改为辰阳县。⑽

按：因无具体时间，暂作三国吴黄武元年（222年）置。
⑵嘉庆《清一统志》卷364《常德府一》：“龙阳县，在府东少南八十里。……汉索县地，后汉汉寿县地，三国吴析置龙阳县，属武陵郡。晋以后因之。唐属朗州。宋初属鼎州。大观中，改曰辰阳。绍兴三年复故。五年置军使。三十年复为县，属常德府。元元贞初升为州，属常德路。明洪武九年复降为县，属常德府。本朝因之。”
《湖南省志》第2卷《地理志（修订本）》第2篇《沿革》：“汉寿县在西汉时为索县地。东汉改索县为汉寿县。治所均在今常德县境（见前索县故城条）。三国吴，改汉寿县为吴寿县。赤乌十一年（公元248年），分吴寿县置龙阳县，设治所于今县城。隋并临沅、沅南、汉寿三县为武陵县，割汉寿县之半入龙阳县。（见光绪《湖南全省舆图》）宋绍兴五年（公元1135年），升龙阳为军，移治黄城砦。三十年（公元1160年），迁回原治。（见《宋史?地理志》）傅角今编《湖南地理志》：‘现韩坡堤、竹子坡堤、鸡公堤、铁门关堤，即前故城城脚故址，堤势围连，犹可想见城墙形势也。“（页503）元、明、清治所未变。民国二年（公元1913年），改龙阳县为汉寿县。”（湖南人民出版社，上册，658页）
