明万历二十五年（1597）析绥宁、会同二县地置。⑴治所即今贵州天柱县驻地。属靖州直隶州。清雍正四年四月戊寅（1726.5.17）往属贵州省黎平府。⑵
⑴《明史》卷44《地理五》：“天柱，州西北。本天柱守御千户所，洪武二十五年五月置。万历二十五年改为县，析绥宁、会同二县地益之。”（中华书局1974年点校本，4册，第1095页）
⑵《世宗实录》卷43：清雍正四年四月戊寅，“兵部议覆贵州铜仁府正大营同知冯光裕条奏，湖南平溪、清浪二卫与贵州思州府接壤，应如所请。再查湖南天柱县，与贵州黎平府接壤，应改隶贵州；四川东川府与云南寻甸州接壤，应改隶云南，就近管辖。从之。”（中华书局，《清实录》，第7册，第633页下）",
