约三国初，废烝阳侯国，改置为县。⑴所在今湖南衡阳市区西北，一说在今邵东县东南。⑵三国吴太平二年（257）改属衡阳郡。⑶晋因之。⑷约南朝宋废。⑸
⑴按：国除为县的具体时间，难以考证。暂作三国吴黄武元年（222）废侯国，置县。
⑵《元和郡县图志》卷29《江南道五》：“蒸阳故城，在县西一百七十里。”（北京，中华书局，下册，第705页）
《读史方舆纪要》卷80《湖广六》：“承阳城，府西百七十里。汉县，后汉曰烝阳，属零陵郡。三国吴改属衡阳郡。晋因之。太元中省。其故城亦曰烝城。”（北京，中华书局，第4册，第3444页）
《湖南古今地名辞典》：承阳县，“西汉置，属长沙国。治所在今衡阳市区西北，一说在今邵东县东南。”（湖南出版社，第140页）

《宋书》卷37《州郡三》（北京，中华书局，4册，1129页）衡阳郡无此县。清洪亮吉《东晋疆域志》衡阳郡仍有此县（《二十五史补编》，第3册，第3615页），当是南朝宋废。
