隋开皇九年（589）平陈，迁治今湖南衡东县北石湾镇一带。⑴属衡州。⑵大业三年（607）属衡山郡。⑶唐武德四年（621）属衡州。⑷天宝元年（742）属衡阳郡。⑸天宝八年（749）改名衡山县。⑹
⑴嘉庆《清一统志》卷362《衡州府一》：“衡山故城，在今衡山县东北。……按：《隋书?地理志》：长沙郡领衡山。此衡山乃晋宋湘西县地。平陈，郡废，省衡山县地入焉。此衡山乃晋故县，即今治也。盖隋废故衡山，改湘西为衡山，乃别有湘潭县在今攸县界。唐天宝中始移湘潭之名于隋衡山县。因又移衡山之名，还晋故衡山县也。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，134册，17页）
