三国吴置。⑴治所在今湖南衡山县驻地开云镇南。⑵属衡阳郡。晋惠帝时改名衡山县。⑶
⑴《宋书?州郡志》：“衡山男相，吴立曰衡阳，晋惠帝更名。”（北京，中华书局，4册，1130页）
嘉庆《清一统志》卷362《衡州府一》：“衡山县，……汉湘南县，三国吴太平二年立衡阳郡，兼置衡阳、湘西二县，晋改衡阳县曰衡山县，仍属衡阳郡，宋齐因之。隋初郡废，省衡山。”（134册，2页）
吴增仅、杨守敬：《三国郡县表附考证》：“衡阳《元和志》：吴分湘南立。”（《二十五史补编》，第3册，2953页。）作太平二年前已置县。
按：因无具体年份可考，暂同《清一统志》之说，以三国吴太平二年（257年）为置县之年。
⑵《读史方舆纪要》卷80《湖广六》：“衡山旧城，在县西。《志》云：隋大业六年，徙县治白马峰下。唐神龙中，还旧治，后又以水患徙治白茅镇。”（北京，中华书局，4册，3446页）
《湖南省志》第2卷《地理志（修订本）》第2篇《沿革》：“衡山县是三国吴太平二年（公元257年）分湘南县地建立的。当时名衡阳县（非今衡阳县）。晋改曰衡山县，治所在兜率寺侧，距今县治南二十里。隋大业六年（公元610年）迁治于白马峰下。唐神龙三年（公元707年）复旧治。其后，又以水患，改迁白茅镇，即今县治也。（见明弘治《衡山县志》）以后无变更。（兜率寺侧距今县治南20里，即衡东雷溪市对河，今红卫化工厂所在处。）”（湖南人民出版社，上册，581页）
