唐贞观八年（634）置。属巫州。⑴治所约在今湖南新晃侗族自治县驻地新晃镇西波洲镇潕水南。⑵长寿初年，移治渭水北。⑶
⑴《旧唐书》卷40《地理三》：“峨山，贞观八年，置夜郎县，属巫州。长安四年，置舞州。开元二十年，改夜郎为峨山县。”（北京，中华书局，5册，1624页）
⑵《元和郡县图志》卷30《江南道六》：“本夜郎县，天宝元年改为峨山。其县本在渭溪之南，长寿初移于溪北。”（北京，中华书局，，754页）
