西汉高后元年（前187年）以沅陵县封沅陵侯国。⑴治所在今湖南沅陵县驻地沅陵镇南沙水溜一带。⑵景帝中元五年（前145年），亡后，国除，⑶复为沅陵县。
⑴《汉书》卷16《高惠高后文功臣表第四》：高后元年，以父长沙王功侯，封沅陵顷侯吴阳。（北京，中华书局，第2册，第621页）
⑵《水经?沅水注》：“沅水又东迳县故治北，移县治，县之旧城置都尉府，因冈傍阿，势尽川陆，临沅对酉，二川之交会也。”
嘉庆《清一统志》卷366《辰州府一》：“沅陵故城在今沅陵县西南。汉置县，陈天嘉初置沅州，徙县今治。”（第135册，第11页）
