明洪武二年（1369）降茶陵州置，⑴治所即今湖南省茶陵县治。属潭州路。明洪武五年六月戊戌（1372.7.18）属长沙府。⑵明成化十八年十月丁丑（1482.11.22）升为州。⑶
⑴嘉靖《茶陵县志》卷上《郡谱第一》：“太祖吴元年甲辰，湖广江西平，众往归附之。以知州吴聚来领焉。洪武二季改为县，属长沙府。成化十九年复为州，以地居茶山之阴，故曰茶。《尔雅》曰大阜曰陵。”（上海书店，《天一阁藏明代方志选刊续编》，第63册，第847页）又卷下《官守第三》载“吴元年为州”，知州吴聚；“洪武二年改县”，知县成麟，河南人，洪武三年任。（同上，第971-972页）
一作元至正二十四年。《明史》卷44《地理五》：“茶陵州，元直隶湖南道。太祖甲辰降为县。成化十八年十月复为州。”（中华书局1974年点校本，4册，第1087页）
