元元贞元年（1295）升湘乡县置。⑴治所即今湖南湘乡市驻地。属潭州路。天历二年（1329）属天临路。⑵至正二十四年（1364）朱元璋改属潭州府。⑶至正二十四年（1364）朱元璋降为县。⑷

《大明清类天文分野之书》卷19：“元元贞元年升为州，属潭州路。本朝甲辰年改为县，隶长沙府。”
