唐武德四年（621）析长沙县置。⑴治所即今湖南醴陵市驻地。属潭州。天宝元年（742）属长沙郡。⑵乾元元年（758）复属潭州。⑶五代初因之。后唐天成二年（927），马殷建楚国，属长沙府。⑷后唐长兴元年（930），楚国废，仍属潭州。⑸宋因之。⑹元至元十四年（1277）属潭州路。⑺元贞元年（1295）升为醴陵州。⑻
