北宋太平兴国三年（978）迁今治，⑴治所在今湖南汝城县驻地城关镇。属郴州。元至元十三年（1276）属郴州路。⑵明洪武元年（1358）属郴州府。洪武九年四月甲午（1376.4.29）属郴州直隶州。⑶治所即今湖南汝城县。至清末未变。⑷
⑴万历《郴州志》卷8《创设志上》：“桂阳县治在城西北隅（旧在市之北。太平兴国三年迁今址。元因之。）”（上海古籍书店，《天一阁藏明代方志选刊》，第58册）
⑵明?宋廉等：《元史》卷63《地理六》：“郴州路，下。唐改桂阳郡为郴州，宋因之。元至元十三年，置安抚司。十四年，改郴州路总管府。领司一、县六。”（中华书局，1976年校点本，第5册，第1530页）
