北宋太平兴国元年（976），避宋太宗讳，改义章县置。⑴治所即今湖南宜章县驻地城关镇。属郴州。元至元十三年（1276）属郴州路。⑵明洪武元年（1358）属郴州府。⑶洪武九年四月甲午（1376.4.29）属郴州直隶州。⑷至清末未变。⑸
⑴《元丰九域志》卷6《荆湖路》：“太平兴国元年改郴义县为桂阳，义章县为宜章。景德元年以蓝山县隶桂阳监。熙宁六年改高亭县为永兴。”（中华书局，第263页）
康熙《郴州总志》卷1《封域志》：“太平兴国初避太宗讳，改义章为宜章，改郴义为郴阳县。”（线装书局，《国家图书馆藏清代孤本方志选》，第103页）又：“宋太平兴国元年改义章为宜章，以避太宗讳，故也。”（同上，第108页）
