西汉孝惠帝元年（前194）九月封长沙吴王子吴浅置。⑴治所在今湖南永兴县驻地城关镇。⑵属长沙国。文帝后元七年（前157）属长沙郡。⑶武帝元鼎五年（前112）国除。⑷

按：封便侯国以前，是否已经有便县，待考。
⑵宋本《太平寰宇记》卷117《江南西道十五》：“高亭县……本汉便县地，属零陵。今县东南一里有古便城，即汉为邑理所。其城亦南临耒水。”
《湖南省志》第2卷《地理志》第2篇《沿革》：“永兴县治在耒水上游东岸。灵江水于治北入耒水。即今城关镇。永兴县在秦代为郴县地。汉高帝时（公元前206年—195年）分郴县置便县，治所在今县城。”（湖南人民出版社，1982年，上册，第608页）
