元至元十三年（1276）以郴县改名。治所即今湖南郴州市。为郴州路治所。⑴明洪武元年（1358）为郴州府治。洪武九年四月甲午（1376.4.29）废，并入郴州直隶州。⑵
⑴《大明清类天文分野之书》卷19：“五代罢资兴为寨，入郴县。晋天福初改郴县曰敦化。汉初复曰郴县。宋因之。元至元十三年改为郴阳县，属郴州路。”
明?宋廉等：《元史》卷63《地理六》：“郴阳，中。倚郭。旧为敦化县，至元十三年，改今名。”（中华书局，1976年校点本，第5册，第1530页）旧县名误。
⑵《明史》卷44《地理五》：“郴州，元郴州路，属湖南道宣慰司。洪武元年为府。九年四月降为州，以州治郴阳县省入，直隶布政司。”（中华书局1974年点校本，4册，第1093页）",
