约刘玄更始元年（公元23），改宣风县复名郴县。⑴治所在今湖南郴州市城区。东汉属桂阳郡，约光武帝后为郡治。⑵三国吴、晋、南朝宋、齐、梁、陈因之。⑶隋开皇九年（589）平陈，为郴州治。⑷大业三年（607）为桂阳郡治。⑸唐武德四年（621）为郴州治。⑹天宝元年（742）为桂阳郡治。乾元元年（758）为郴州治。⑺五代晋天福初改名敦化县。⑻
⑴据考证，东汉恢复西汉郡县名，大多在刘玄更始元年（公元23）。
