约东晋建武元年（317年）置九江县，属寻阳郡，旋省入寻阳（1）。治所无考（2），暂定九江西南十五里处。
注：
（1）《晋书》卷15《地理志下》：元帝渡江，寻阳郡又置九江、上甲二县，寻又省九江县入寻阳。（北京，中华书局，1974年，2册，463页。）《舆地纪胜》卷30《江南西路》江州下云：九江县“《寻阳志》云，晋元帝置，后省入寻阳。”（北京，中华书局，1992年，2册，1320—1页。）明嘉靖六年《九江府志》卷3《方舆志·古迹》德化县：“九江废县，在府境，晋元帝置，后省。”（《中国方志丛书》华中地方735号，成文出版社有限公司，1册，171页。）按：元帝即位在建武元年（317年），姑作此年置，何年省史不载，今作次年即废。
（2）东晋咸和以后，义熙以前，寻阳在今九江市西，九江县具体方位无考。",
