唐武德五年（622年）分湓城置，属江州，贞观八年（634年）废入浔阳县（1）。治今江西九江市西南二十里（2）。
注：
（1）《旧唐书》卷40《地理志三》江州：武德四年，又分湓城置楚城县，贞观八年，废楚城县入浔阳。（北京，中华书局，1975年，5册，1608页。）《新唐书》卷41《地理志五》江州：浔阳“本湓城，武德四年更名，又别置湓城县，五年析湓城置楚城县，八年省湓城，贞观八年省楚城。”（北京，中华书局，1975年，4册，1068页。）
（2）《清嘉庆一统志》卷318《九江府一·古迹》柴桑故城：“胡三省曰，寻阳时治柴桑，今江州德化县西南九十里，有柴桑山是也。”又“唐武德五年于其地置楚城县，贞观八年废入浔阳。《通典》今浔阳县南楚城驿，即旧柴桑县也。《元和志》柴桑城，在浔阳县西南二十里。”（商务印书馆，1934年，《四部丛刊续编》，116册，17页。）按：楚城驿因楚城县得名，今从《元和志》、《通典》。唐浔阳、清德化即今九江市。",
