三国吴赤乌八年（245年）自今县东古县渡移治吴芮故城即今县，为鄱阳郡治（1）。晋太康元年（280年）属鄱阳郡，南朝宋同（2）。约齐建初元年（479年）仍为鄱阳郡治，梁、陈不改（3）。隋开皇九年（589年）为饶州治，大业三年（607年）复为鄱阳郡治（4）。唐武德四年（621年）又为饶州治。天宝元年（742年）再为鄱阳郡治，乾元元年（758年）复为饶州治（5）。宋同（6）。元至元十四年（1277年）为饶州路治，至正二十一年（1361年）朱元璋为鄱阳府治，旋（1362年）为饶州府治（7），清迄1911年不改（8）。治今江西波阳县。
