南朝梁大通二年（528年）分临川郡北境置，属临川郡。（1）治所在今江西临川市北雷坊。（2）隋开皇九年（589年）併入临川县。（3）

（1）《太平寰宇记》卷110《江南西道八·抚州》临川县：吴太平二年，以临汝县为临川郡。南朝梁大通二年（528年）分临川北境置定川县。（金陵书局，光绪八年刊本，21册，3页）
（2）清《嘉庆一统志》卷322《抚州府一·古迹》定川故城：在临川县北。“《县志》：定川城，一名母城，在今县北雷坊。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，118册，16页）按：清临川县即今临川市。今临川市北有雷坊，（《江西省地图集》，江西省地图编辑委员会，1963年，82、83页）当即故定川县治。
