隋开皇九年（589年）改临汝县置，为抚州治。（1）治所在今江西临川市西五里。（2）大业三年（607年）为临川郡治。（3）唐武德五年（622年）改为抚州治，天宝元年（742年）又为临川郡治，乾元元年（758年）复为抚州治。（4）宝应元年（762年），县治迁今江西临川市。（5）

（1）《隋书》卷31《地理志下》临川郡：“平陈，置抚州。”治临川县。（北京，中华书局，1973年，3册，879页）《旧唐书》卷40《地理志三·江南西道》抚州临川县：隋平陈，“改临汝县为临川县。”（北京，中华书局，1975年，5册，1607页）按：隋平陈在开皇九年（589年）。又唐李吉甫《元和郡县图志》卷28《江南道四·抚州》临川县：临汝县，“开元九年（721年）改为临川县。”（北京，中华书局，1983年，下册，680页）此“开元”乃“开皇”之误。当作隋开皇九年，临汝县改为临川县。
(2)明徐良傅等纂修《抚州府志》（一）卷3《地理志·疆域图》谓临汝县故治：“汝水西，临水东有平陆，曰赤岡，古州治也。……今城西寺西南赤岡是也。”（《中国方志丛书》，台湾成文出版社,据明嘉靖三十三年刊本影印，1989年，925册，111页）清《嘉庆一统志》卷322《抚州府·古迹》临汝故城：“《县志》：赤岡在今城（今临川县）西五里。城西寺之西南。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，118册，16页）据牛平汉《清代政区沿革综表》谓，清临川县即今江西抚州市。（北京，中国地图出版社，1990年，180页）但据《中华人民共和国行政区划》1987年抚州市已改为临川市，则临汝县故治，在今江西临川市西五里。
