东汉永元八年（96年）分南城县、南昌县地置，属豫章郡（1）治所在今江西临川市西五里。（2）三国吴太平二年（257年）属临川郡。（3）西晋泰始元年（265年）为临川郡治。（4）南朝宋不改。（5）齐建元元年（480年）属临川郡。（6）梁天监元年（502年）为临川郡治。陈不改。（7）隋开皇九年（589年）改名为临川县。（8）

(2)明徐良傅等纂修《抚州府志》（一）卷3《地理志·疆域图》谓临汝县故治：“汝水西，临水东有平陆，曰赤岡，古州治也。……今城西寺西南赤岡是也。”（《中国方志丛书》，台湾成文出版社,据明嘉靖三十三年刊本影印，1989年，925册，111页）清《嘉庆一统志》卷322《抚州府·古迹》临汝故城：“《县志》：赤岡在今城（今临川县）西五里。城西寺之西南。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，118册，16页）据牛平汉《清代政区沿革综表》谓，清临川县即今江西抚州市。（北京，中国地图出版社，1990年，180页）但据《中华人民共和国行政区划》1987年抚州市已改为临川市，则临汝县故治，在今江西临川市西五里。
（3）《三国志》卷48《吴书·三嗣主传》孙亮太平二年（257年）：以“豫章东部为临川郡”。（北京,中华书局,1975年,5册,1153页）《太平寰宇记》卷110《江南西道八·抚州》临川县：“吴太平二年，以临汝县为临川郡于郡南。”（金陵书局，光绪八年刊本，21册，3页）
（4）《晋书》卷15《地理志下》临川郡治临汝县。（北京,中华书局,1974年,2册,462页）按：临川郡本治南城县。故作泰始元年（265年），临川郡治临汝县，南城县属临川郡。
（5）《宋书》卷36《州郡志二》临川内史治临汝。（北京,中华书局,1974年,4册,1088页）按：此时王国、侯国作郡、县处理。
（6）《南齐书》卷14《州郡志上·江州》：临川郡治南城县，领有临汝县。（北京,中华书局,1972年,1册,261页）清曹养恒等修《南城县志》卷1《沿革》：“齐建元初徙临川郡治于南城。”（《中国方志丛书》，台湾成文出版社,据清康熙十九年刊本影印，1989年，817册，46页）按：当作建元元年（480年）临川郡治南城县。

（8）《隋书》卷31《地理志下》：临川郡治临川县。（北京，中华书局，1973年，3册，879页）《旧唐书》卷40《地理志三·江南西道》抚州临川县：隋平陈，“改临汝县为临川县。”（北京，中华书局，1975年，5册，1607页）按：隋平陈在开皇九年（589年）。又唐李吉甫《元和郡县图志》卷28《江南道四·抚州》临川县：临汝县，“开元九年（721年）改为临川县。”（北京，中华书局，1983年，下册，680页）此“开元”乃“开皇”之误。当作隋开皇九年，临汝县改为临川县。",
