北宋宣和三年（1121年）改万载县置，属袁州。（1）治所即今江西万载县。（2）南宋绍兴元年（1131年）复名万载县。（3）

（1）《宋史》卷88《地理志四·江南西路》袁州万载县县：“开宝末，自筠州来属。宣和三年（1121年），改名建城。”（北京，中华书局，1977年，7册，2190页）
（2）清《嘉庆一统志》卷326《袁州府·古迹》万载场：“即今万载县治。……本高安县地。杨吴顺义元年，分高安晋城、康乐、高侯等四乡，置万载场。……南唐保大十年，升场为县。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，120册，13页）据牛平汉《清代政区沿革综表》谓，清万载县即今江西万载县。（北京，中国地图出版社，1990年，181页）按：建城县本万载县，未见徙治，也当治今万载县。
