五代南唐保大十年（952年）分高安县地置，属筠州。（1）治所即今江西万载县。（2）北宋开宝八年（975年），改属袁州。宣和三年（1121年），改名建城县。（3）

（1）《太平寰宇记》卷106《江南西道七·袁州》万载县：本高安地，“伪唐保大十年（952年）升高安县为筠州，遂升万载场为县，以属焉。”（金陵书局，光绪八年刊本，21册，10页）而宋欧阳忞《舆地广记》卷25《江南西路·袁州》下作“万岁县”。（《丛书集成》初编，上海，商务印书馆，民国二十六年，3107册，261页）与之异。
（2）清《嘉庆一统志》卷326《袁州府·古迹》万载场：“即今万载县治。……本高安县地。杨吴顺义元年，分高安晋城、康乐、高侯等四乡，置万载场。……南唐保大十年，升场为县。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，120册，13页）据牛平汉《清代政区沿革综表》谓，清万载县即今江西万载县。（北京，中国地图出版社，1990年，181页）
