北宋雍熙元年（984年）析宜春县地置，属袁州。（1）治所在今江西分宜县东南江口水库东北部。（2）元至元十四年（1277年）改属袁州路。（3）元至正二十年（1360年）又属袁州府。（4）清不改。（5）1912年废府，属江西省。（6）

（1）《宋史》卷88《地理志四·江南西路》袁州分宜县：“雍熙元年（984年）置。”（北京，中华书局，1977年，7册，2190页）又《太平寰宇记》卷109《江南西道七·袁州》分宜县：“本宜春县地，皇朝雍熙元年（984年）八月，析宜春神龙等一十乡置分宜县，以便民欲。”（金陵书局，光绪八年刊本，21册，8页）
（2）清蔡文鸾等修《分宜县志》（一）卷3《县署》：“分宜县治，宋雍熙元年，析宜春地置，县滨秀江。”（《中国方志丛书》，台湾成文出版社,据清康熙二十二年刊本影印，1989年，752册，133页）据《江西省地图集》分宜县：“本县建于宋，以分自宜春县地故名。明清皆属袁州府，县历设钤阳镇，此镇因系江口水库范围，1958年北迁潭家边（改称分宜镇）。（江西省地图编辑委员会，1963年，31-32页）故县治当在今江西分宜县东南江口水库东北部。
（3）《元史》卷62《地理志五·江西等处行中书省》袁州路：“唐为袁州，又为宜春郡。元至元十三年，置安抚司。十四年（1277年）改总管府，领四县。……隶湖南行省。十九年，升路，隶江西行省。”领有分宜县。（北京，中华书局，1976年，5册，1510页）按：置总管府即置路，又据《新元史》卷50《地理志十七·江西等处行中书省》袁州路下无“升路”二字。（上海，开明书店，1935年，上册，127页）故《元志》之“升路”二字，当为衍文。应作至元十四年置路。
（4）《明史》卷43《地理志四·江西》袁州府：“元袁州路，属江西省。太祖庚子年（至正二十年，即1360年）为府。”领有分宜县。（北京，中华书局，1974年，4册，1064页）
