南宋绍兴三十一年（1161年）迁置，治所即今江西宜春市。为袁州治。（1）元至元十四年（1277年）改为袁州路治。（2）元至正二十年（1360年）又为袁州府治。（3）清不改。（4）1912年废府，属江西省。（5）

（1）《宋史》卷88《地理志四·江南西路》袁州，治宜春县。（北京，中华书局，1977年，7册，2190页）又清江为龙等纂修《宜春县志》（三）卷11《官署》：“隋大业三年，移于州之东七里，宋绍兴三十一年（1161年），县宰胡安老始徙于城内善政坊。元季兵毁。明洪武三年知县仲时举以旧址狭隘，迁于府治北开元寺旧基，即今治。”（《中国方志丛书》，台湾成文出版社,据清康熙四十七年刊本影印，1989年，789册，955、956页）按：据牛平汉《清代政区沿革综表》谓，袁州府宜春县，即江西省宜春市。（北京，中国地图出版社，1990年，181页）则南宋以后宜春县又治今江西省宜春市。《中国历史地图集》唐、五代时袁州治宜春县，已在今宜春市，不知所据，不从。
（2）《元史》卷62《地理志五·江西等处行中书省》袁州路：“唐为袁州，又为宜春郡。元至元十三年，置安抚司。十四年（1277年）改总管府，领四县。……隶湖南行省。十九年，升路，隶江西行省。”治宜春县。（北京，中华书局，1976年，5册，1510页）按：置总管府即置路，又据《新元史》卷50《地理志十七·江西等处行中书省》袁州路下无“升路”二字。（上海，开明书店，1935年，上册，127页）故《元志》之“升路”二字，当为衍问。当作至元十四年置路。
