隋开皇十一年（591年）改石阳县置，为吉州治。（1）治所在今江西吉水县东北三十里。（2）大业三年（607年）为廬陵郡治。（3）唐武德五年（622年）为吉州治。（4）永淳元年（682年）徙治今江西吉安市。（5）

（1）《隋书》卷31《地理志下》廬陵郡：“平陈，置吉州。”（北京，中华书局，1973年，3册，880页）而《太平寰宇记》卷109《江南西道七·吉州》廬陵县石阳故城：“隋开皇十年（590年）改廬陵郡为吉州，改石阳县为廬陵。”（金陵书局，光绪八年刊本，21册，25页）按：廬陵郡改吉州应在开皇十一年（591年），石阳县为廬陵也当在此年。《旧唐书》卷40《地理志三·江南西道》吉州廬陵县：“……隋复为廬陵，州所治也。”（北京，中华书局，1975年，5册，1608页）
（2）《太平寰宇记》卷109《江南西道七·吉州》吉水县石阳故城：“隋开皇十年（590年）改廬陵郡为吉州，改石阳县为廬陵。今在旧州东北故城是也。”又旧郡城下曰：“在县东北二十五里”（金陵书局，光绪八年刊本，21册，25、24页）则廬陵县治即在今吉水县东北三十里的故石阳县治。而《太平寰宇记》卷109《江南西道七·吉州》廬陵县石阳故城：“隋开皇十年（590年）改廬陵郡为吉州，改石阳县为廬陵。移于今郡理，此故城存”（15页）；清梅大鹤等修《廬陵县志》（一）卷二《地舆志·沿革》：“文帝开皇九年（589年），改廬陵郡为吉州，置州城于今郡城（今江西吉安市）西南五里，改石阳为廬陵县。”《中国方志丛书》，台湾，成文出版社据清道光五年刊本影印，1989年，953册，294页）均与之异。
