南宋绍兴二十三年（1153年）改虔化县置，属赣州。（1）治所即今江西宁都县。（2）元至元十四年（1277年）属赣州路。（3）大德元年（1297年）升为宁都州。（4）

（1《宋史》卷88《地理志四·江南西路》赣州：本虔州，南康郡，绍兴“二十三年（1153年）改今名”，领有信丰县。又虔化县下曰：“绍兴二十三年（1153年），改宁都。”（北京，中华书局，1977年，7册，2189页）
（2）明莫应奎、王光蕴修《宁都县志》卷1《地舆志》：隋“开皇十八年（598）徙县治雪竹坪，即今址。改宁都曰虔化”（《中国方志丛书》，台湾成文出版社,据明万历二十年刊本影印，1989年，880册，26页）按：后未见迁徙。明宁都县治即今宁都县，故宁都县治当即今宁都县。
