刘玄更始元年（公元23）以毗坛县复名毗陵县。治所即今江苏常州市。东晋义熙九年（413）改名晋陵县。
刘玄更始元年（公元23）以毗坛县复名毗陵县。⑴治所即今江苏常州市。⑵初属会稽郡，顺帝永建四年（129）属吴郡。⑶三国属吴毗陵典农校尉，西晋太康二年（281）属毗陵郡。⑷东晋义熙九年（413）改名晋陵县。⑸
⑴南朝宋·范晔：《后汉书》卷11《刘玄传》：“更始即帝位……建元曰更始元年。……是时海内豪桀翕然哈应，皆杀其牧守，自称将军，用汉年号，以待诏命，旬月之间，遍于天下。”（北京，中华书局，1965年宋云彬等校点本，第2册，469页）王莽被杀于更始元年十月，新莽政亡，时天下当全复汉旧名。

清·吴增仅撰、杨守敬补正《三国郡县表附近考证》卷7《吴扬州部一》有毗陵县，为毗陵典农校尉治所（《二十五史补编》本，3册，2938页）暂以吴黄武元年（222）为置毗陵典农校尉之时间。
