东晋咸康七年（341）改司盐都尉置。治所在明清常熟县西北五十里，约在今江苏张家港市东南。隋开皇九年（589）平陈，废。

⑴南朝梁·沈约：《宋书》卷35《州郡一》：“南沙令，本吴县司盐都尉。吴时名沙中。吴平后，立暨阳县割属之。晋成帝咸康七年，罢盐署，立以为南沙县。”（北京，中华书局，1974年王仲荦等校点本，4册，1040页）
⑵《读史方舆纪要》卷24《江南六》南沙废县：“县西北五十里。咸康七年，始罢盐署，立为南沙县，属晋陵郡。宋齐因之。梁置信义郡。隋平陈，废郡。又徙常熟县治焉。唐移县于今治，故城遂墟。”（北京，中华书局，2册，1116页）具体定点参考谭其骧主编《中国历史地图集》第4册南朝齐扬州幅。
