《太平寰宇记》卷91：《江南东道三》：“大同初，又分信义县置昆山县，属吴郡。因县有昆山，故名。”（金陵书局，光绪八年刊本，13-14页）
据此，暂定在梁大同元年（535）置县。
⑵关于唐天宝十载前昆山县的治所，历来有二种观点。一说即今江苏昆山市。一说在今上海市境小昆山旁，唐天宝十载置华亭县后迁今治，如《中国历史地图集》。今查《元和郡县志》、《太平寰宇记》、《绍熙云间志》、《淳祐玉峰志》、《至正昆山郡志》等唐宋史籍，均云昆山县因昆山得名，而无迁治记载。因本时期内还有信义县治在今昆山县西正仪，如果将昆山县治定位于今昆山县，两县治相距太近，不合常理。现暂定梁大同元年置县时治于今上海市松江县小昆山。而隋朝复置昆山县时，已无信义县，其治所当已在今江苏昆山市。
