清嘉庆三年（1798年）置，属漳州府1。治所即今福建云霄县2。1913年，废厅改县3。

1，嘉庆二十一年《云霄厅志》卷1·方域·建置：国初为漳州府云霄镇，嘉庆元年，巡抚以云霄地当三县要冲，奏改南胜同知为抚民同知，移驻云霄，是为云霄厅。疆界：“嘉庆三年，割浦、和、诏三县地奏设厅治，始有分界。”（台湾，成文出版社《中国方志丛书》台湾地区第89号，1册，35、37页）。据此，正式设厅作在嘉庆三年。
2，《嘉庆一统志》卷429·漳州府·关隘：“云霄镇，在漳浦县西南六十里。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，157册）。即今福建云霄县。
3，内政部编《中华民国行政区域简表》福建省·云霄县“旧云霄厅，民国二年三月改县”，直隶福建省。（商务印书馆，1947年，66页）。",
