唐天宝元年（742年），以黄连县更名，初属临汀郡，乾元元年（758年），属汀州1。治所在今福建宁化县东五里，五代后唐同光元年（923年）迁今治2。

1，《旧唐书》卷40·地理三·江南东道·汀洲：“开元二十四年，开福、抚二州山洞，置汀州。天宝元年，改为临汀郡。乾元元年，复为汀州。天宝领县三：”“长汀，州治所；龙岩；宁化。以上三县，并开元二十四年，开山洞置。”（北京，中华书局，1975年，3册，1600-1601页）。《新唐书》卷41·地理五·江南道·汀洲·宁化县：“本黄连，天宝元年更名。”（北京，中华书局，1975年，4册，1065页）。今据此作开元二十四年置县，名黄连，天宝元年更名宁化。
2，《读史方舆纪要》卷98·福建四·汀州府·宁化县：“黄连城，县东五里。本黄连镇，唐置黄连县于此，以地产黄连而名，寻曰宁化。后唐同光元年，王闽迁县之于镇西竹篠窝。”（北京，中华书局，1955年，5册，4066页）。《嘉庆一统志》卷434·汀州府一·古迹·黄连废县：“在宁化县东。”“旧《志》：黄连故城，在今县东五里，亦曰黄连镇。五代后唐同光元年，王闽迁治于镇西竹篠窝，即今治也。”（《四部丛刊续编》，商务印书馆，1934年，160册）。牛平汉《清代政区沿革综表》福建省汀州府·宁化县，治所今址：“福建省宁化县。”（北京，中国地图出版社，1990年171页）。",
