宋开宝八年（975年），以松源县改名1。治所即今福建松溪县2。初属建州，南宋绍兴三十二年（1162年），属建宁府3。元至元二十六年（1289年），属建宁路4。明洪武元年（1368年），属建宁府5。清因之6。1913年废府留县7。
