唐永泰二年（766年）置，属福州1。治所即今福建永泰县2。五代长兴四年（933年）属长乐府，乾祐元年（948年）属福州3。宋崇宁元年（1102年）更名永福4。

2，《嘉庆一统志》卷425·福州府一·古迹：“永泰废县，在永福县西。”其后未见迁徙记载，永泰废县当在清永福县治之西。同城不另列目。牛平汉《清代政区沿革综表》福建省福州府，永福县“治所今址：福建省永泰县。”（中国地图出版社，1990年，169页）。
