唐永贞元年（805年），以淳州更名1。领永定、武罗、灵竹等县。州治永定县，治所在今广西峦城镇郁江北岸。辖境相当今广西横县西部地区和宾阳县南部地区2。宋开宝六年（973年），废州，废武罗、罗竹二县入永定县改属横州3。

1，《元和志》卷38?蛮州：“本汉领方县地，贞观末、永徽初置。后以蛮、獠背叛废，于其城置驿，开元十五年李商隐重奏置…。东沿流至横州一百三十里。…永定县，郭下。”（北京，中华书局，1983年，下册，955页）。
《旧唐书》卷41?地理4?蛮州：“秦桂林郡。唐置淳化（当为淳州），失起置年月。天宝元年改为永定郡，乾元元年复为淳州也。领县三：永定，州所治也。武罗、灵竹，二县与州同置。”（中华书局，1975年，5册，1741页）。
《唐书》卷43上?地理7上?峦州永定郡：“本淳州，武德四年以故秦桂林郡置，永贞元年更名。”“县三：永定，武罗，灵竹。”（中华书局，1975年，5册，1103页）。
据以上资料，从《唐书》作唐武德四年置，叛废之事不作处理。
