宋泰始元年（465年），以始安郡更名，属湘州，割广州苍梧郡建陵县来属，境域扩大。领始安，始阳，平乐，熙平，熙平，永丰，荔浦，建陵，乐化，建陵等县。郡治始安县，治所即今广西桂林市。辖境相当今广西境域相当今广西灵渠以南、永福、荔浦、平乐以北地区2。齐建元元年（479年）更名始安郡。

1，《宋书》卷37州郡4?湘州：“始建内使，吴孙皓甘露元年，分零陵南部都尉立始安郡，属广州，晋成帝度荆州，宋文帝元嘉二十九年度广州，三十年复度湘洲。明帝改名。领县七：始安子相，汉旧县，属零陵；熙平令，吴立为尚安，晋武改；永丰男相，吴立；荔浦令，汉旧县，属苍梧；平乐侯相，吴立；建陵男相，吴立，属苍梧，宋末度；乐化左令，宋末立。”（中华书局，1974年。4册，1135页）。
