吴赤乌五年（242年），析合浦郡东南部置（1）。郡治徐闻县，治所即今广东徐闻县南五里镇。辖境相当今广东省遂溪县、海康县、徐闻县和湛江市（2）。晋太康元年（280年）郡废，县复属合浦郡（3）。

（1），《三国志》卷61?吴书?陆凯传：“赤乌中，除儋耳太守，讨朱崖，斩获有功，迁为建武校尉。”（北京，中华书局，1959年，5册，1400页）。《通鉴》作正始三年（吴赤乌五年）三月陆凯击珠崖。《晋志》交州下作“赤乌五年复置朱崖郡”，“平吴后省珠崖入合浦。”（北京，中华书局，1974年，2册，465页）。
参见注（3），今作吴赤乌五年儋耳太守陆凯，“讨朱崖，斩获有功”时，置朱崖郡，治徐闻县。晋太康元年平吴废朱崖郡，县复属合浦郡。
