梁中大同元年（546年），析始兴郡置（1）。领始兴县。郡治即今广东省南雄县东北大塘镇（2）。辖境相当今广东省南雄、始兴二县（2）。隋开皇十年（590年）郡废，改置大庾县，属韶州（3）。

（1），《隋书》卷31?地理下?南海郡?始兴：“齐曰正阶，梁改名焉，又置安远郡，置东衡州。平陈，改郡置大庾县，又于此置广州总管。开皇末移向南海，又十六年废大庾入焉。”（北京，中华书局，1973年，3册，881页）。《太平寰宇记》卷160?南雄州?始兴县：“本汉南海县地，吴置始兴县，梁于此置安远郡，隋平陈郡废，县仍隶韶州。西七里有萧齐正阶故县城存。”（金陵书局，光绪八年刊本，28册。）《读史方舆纪要》作梁末置安远郡。今作梁中大同元年始兴县移治之时，分始兴郡置安远郡，始兴县属之。
