梁天监六年（507年）置（1）。领中宿、浈阳、威正、廉平、恩洽、浮护等县。郡治中宿县，治所即今广东省清远市西北城帼。梁承圣三年（554年），析浈阳县置翁源县来属。辖境相当今广东省清远，佛冈，翁源等县和英德县东部地区，新丰县西北部地区，连平县西北部地区（2）。陈永定元年（557年），迁郡治翁源县（3）。

（1），《水经注疏》卷38?溱水注：“溱水又西南迳中宿县南，吴孙皓分四会之北乡立焉。守敬按：汉县属南海郡，后汉因。骊云，吴孙皓分四会立，盖后汉末尝废入四会，吴重立也。吴属始兴郡，晋因。宋属广兴郡，齐属始兴郡，梁为清远郡治。在今清远县西北六十里。”（江苏古籍出版社，1986年，下册，3189页）。
《元和郡县图志》卷34?广州?清远县：“本汉中宿县地也，梁武帝于此置清远郡，中宿县属之。隋开皇十年废郡，置清远县，属广州。”（北京，中华书局，下册，890-891页）。
（2），据所领县治故址，并参考宣统元年《广东舆地全图》，辖境相当今广东省清远，佛冈，翁源等县，和英德县东部地区，新丰县西北部地区，连平县西北部地区。
（3），《元和郡县图志》卷34?广州?清远县：‘隋开皇十年废郡，置清远县’。校勘记：“清远郡，陈已徙于翁源。”（北京，中华书局，下册，906页）。姑作永定元年迁治。",
