（1），《旧唐书》卷41?岭南道?潘州：“隋合浦郡之定川县。武德四年，置南宕州，领南昌、定川、陆川、思城、温水、宕川六县，治南昌县。贞观六年移治定川。八年改为潘州，仍废思城县。天宝元年，改为南潘郡。乾元元年，复为潘州也。”旧领县五，天宝后领县三：茂名，州所治。南巴。潘水。（北京，中华书局，1975年，5册，1742页）。
《唐书》卷43上?地理7：“潘州南潘郡，本南宕州南巴郡，武德四年以合浦郡之南昌、定川置。本治南昌，贞观元年徙治定川，八年更名，后徙治茂名。后废，地入高州。永徽元年复以茂名、南巴、毛山三县置。”“县三：茂名，本隶高州，以茂名水的名，贞观元年来属。潘水，武德五年置，以潘水名，又析南昌、定川置陆川、思城、温水、宕川四县，贞观八年省思城，后以定川、宕川隶牢州，陆川、温水隶禺州，后省南昌，二十三年析潘水置毛山县，以毛山名，其后省潘水县（入毛山），开元二年改毛山曰潘水，南有博畔镇。南巴，本隶高州，武德五年置，永徽元年来属。”（北京，中华书局，1975年，4册，1098页）。",
